Bio

Captain David Hwang was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in October 1997. As a police officer, he has worked Rampart Division, 77th Street Division, Wilshire Division, and Narcotics Division. In 2003, he was promoted to sergeant. As a sergeant he has worked Central Traffic Division, West Traffic Division, Internal Affairs Division, and Special Operations Division. He then transferred to Hollenbeck Division where he worked as a field supervisor and as an assistant watch commander.

In 2017, he promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was assigned to South Traffic Division as a watch commander. In 2019, he was assigned to Internal Affairs Group as the Officer in Charge of Valley Section and South Section. Hwang then worked as the Adjutant to the Commanding Officer of Transit Services Bureau.

In October 2022, Hwang was promoted to the rank of captain and was assigned to Harbor Division as the Patrol Commanding Officer. In September 2023, he was assigned to Force Investigation Division and in March 2024, he was assigned to Internal Affairs Division as the Assistant Commanding Officer.

Captain Hwang was born in South Korea and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of four and grew up in Walnut, California. He and his wife are proud parents to triplets, a daughter and two sons. He enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management.
