Bio

Captain James Lopez was born in Santa Maria, CA. He would move to the Silicon Valley and graduate from Lincoln High School in 1991. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a combat medic with 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1995, Captain Lopez joined the Los Angeles Police Department and graduated with class 9-95.

His first assignment was Newton Street. He would go onto work as an officer in Southwest and Hollenbeck Areas in differing assignments including Patrol, CRASH, SPU, and CLEAR. In 2007 Captain Lopez was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to the All-American Division, 77th Street Area.

He would go on to serve as a patrol Sergeant in Wilshire and Rampart Areas. Captain Lopez would go on to serve a five-year tour as a Gang Sergeant with the 77th Street Gang Enforcement Detail, one of his proudest accomplishments.

In 2019 Captain Lopez was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and would be assigned to Newton Street Area as a Watch Commander. Two years later, Captain Lopez would serve as the Officer-in-Charge of the Southeast Gang Impact Team and as the Southeast Detective Commanding Officer.

In February of 2023, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Commanding Officer of Southwest Patrol Division.

Captain Lopez has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute and University and a Master of Science in Executive Management Leadership from the University of Southern California. He is married to Detective Sandra Lopez and together they have three sons, Alex, Cristian, and Jacob.
