Jonathan Pinto

Bio

Deputy Chief Jonathan Pinto began his distinguished career with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1996. Prior to joining the LAPD, he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years, working as a military police officer and criminal investigator.

After graduating from the Police Academy, Deputy Chief Pinto was first assigned to Rampart Division. He later transferred to the Southwest Area, where he served in various roles including patrol, bike patrol, foot beat, and as a field training officer. He then moved to the Harbor Area, where he was assigned as a Senior Lead Officer, working closely with the community and department stakeholders.

In 2005, he was promoted to Sergeant and held supervisory assignments in the Southeast, Rampart, and Southwest Areas. During this time, he served as a patrol supervisor, gang unit supervisor, and assistant watch commander. He also led the University Park Task Force in Southwest Area, collaborating with USC’s Department of Public Safety to enhance campus and community safety.

Promoted to Lieutenant in 2014, Deputy Chief Pinto was assigned to Newton Area as a watch commander and later became the Officer-in-Charge of the Newton Gang Impact Team. He subsequently served in Employee Relations Group as Officer-in-Charge, where he helped navigate personnel matters and resolve employee concerns.

In 2017, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Commanding Officer of Hollywood Patrol Division. In August 2018, he played a key role in launching the newly created Innovation & Strategic Planning Division. A year later, in June 2019, he was appointed as Commanding Officer of South Traffic Division. In February 2021, he assumed leadership of Training Division, serving as the Commanding Officer and Director of the Police Recruit Academy.

Deputy Chief Pinto was promoted to Commander in April 2022 and assigned as the Assistant Commanding Officer of Operations-West Bureau. In February 2023, he transitioned to Operations-South Bureau as the Assistant Commanding Officer, where he oversaw operations for South Bureau Homicide Division, as well as the Southwest, 77th Street, Southeast, and Harbor Areas. In January 2024, he was selected as the Department’s Employee Relations Administrator, working closely with the Los Angeles Police Protective League, civilian unions, and command staff to address a wide range of human resources issues and workforce challenges.

In 2025, Deputy Chief Pinto was promoted to his current rank and entrusted with the responsibility of establishing the newly formed Human Resources Bureau, a forward-looking initiative aimed at aligning the Department’s strategic goals in employee wellness, retention, and recruitment.

Deputy Chief Pinto holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute & University, and a Master’s degree in Executive Management and Leadership from the University of Southern California. He is also a graduate of the LAPD’s West Point Leadership

Program, the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, and the Senior Management Institute for Police.

In his current role, Deputy Chief Pinto remains committed to leveraging innovation and technology to advance recruitment, strengthen employee wellness programs, and support the long-term sustainability of the Department’s workforce.
