Commander Jonathan Tom was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and is proud to represent five generations of his family who have lived in the city since 1875. He is a graduate of the Los Angeles Unified School District, having attended Third Street Elementary School, the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, and University High School. In 1991, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern California (USC), where he was actively involved in Alpha Kappa Psi and remains a member of the USC Alumni Association. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University.
Commander Tom was promoted to the rank of Commander in October 2022 and currently serves as the Assistant Commanding Officer of the Professional Standards Bureau, overseeing the Internal Affairs Division, Special Operations Division, and Force Investigation Division. His previous assignments include serving as Assistant Commanding Officer of Operations-West Bureau; Commanding Officer of West Los Angeles Area, Critical Incident Review Division, South Traffic Division, Rampart Patrol Division, and Olympic Detective Division. He has also served as Patrol Watch Commander at Olympic Division, Officer-in-Charge of the Evaluation and Administration Unit in the Office of Operations, and the Southwest Area Vice Unit. Other prior roles include Investigator at the Professional Standards Bureau, Patrol Supervisor at Newton and Wilshire Divisions, Auditor for the Criminal Intelligence Group, Field Investigator in the Detective Headquarters Division Gun Unit, and Firearms Instructor at Training Division. Early in his career, he worked as a Patrol and Special Problems Unit Officer in the West Valley, West Los Angeles, and Southwest Divisions. He is certified by the Department as an instructor in tactics, handgun, shotgun, and rifle.
Throughout his career, Commander Tom has held leadership roles during several high-profile events, including the Academy Awards, Los Angeles Marathon, U.S. Open Golf Championship, the transport of the Space Shuttle Endeavour to the California Science Center, BET Experience and Awards, CicLAvia, Armenian Genocide Remembrance March, and May Day demonstrations.
Commander Tom is a dedicated member of the Department’s Peer Support cadre. He is the former President of the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP), and a member of Los Angeles Women Police Officers and Associates (LAWPOA), La Ley, and the Oscar Joel Bryant (OJB) Foundation. He previously served as a delegate for the Los Angeles Police Protective League.
