email Commander Hyams was
appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in January 2015. He
began his career as a police student worker at the Newport Beach
Police Department in October 1975, and attended LAPD Academy Class
2-77. During his 32-year career at NBPD, he served in multiple
assignments and commanded the Operations, Detectives and
Administrative Divisions, and served as Acting Chief of Police.
After leaving NBPD as a Captain, he worked for a short time in the
Los Angeles Office of the Inspector General before accepting a
position as Executive Director of the Orange County Superior Court.
In September 2010, he returned to law enforcement as Assistant
Chief of Police at the Los Angeles International Airport, where he
served until his appointment to the LAPD.

Commander Hyams is an attorney, and holds a Ph.D. in Psychology. He
is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
