Driver Dies After Being Shot and Losing Control of Car

"Driver Dies After Being Shot and Losing Control of Car "

Los Angeles: On August 18, 2002 at approximately 8:40 p.m., six Los Angeles Area males were traveling in a car, eastbound on 223rd Street at Western Avenue in the Harbor Gateway Area, when they were shot at by two unidentified men in another vehicle.

As the gunmen fired several gunshots at the adjacent moving car, the driver, 22 year-old Manuolevao Stibbie of Los Angeles, and a 36 year-old passenger were struck by a hail of bullets. Wounded by the shooting, Stibbie lost control of the vehicle, which then careened out of control and struck several parked cars.

Rescue personnel responded to the scene and rendered aid to Stibbie, who died as a result of his wounds and vehicle collision. Three additional vehicle occupants were transported to local hospitals, where one was listed in guarded condition and the others were treated and released. Two victims were not injured.

The motive for the killing is unknown and Harbor Area Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding this incident to contact them at 310-548-7621, or information may be phoned to a 24-hour toll free number, 1-877-LAWFULL, 1-877-529-3855.

This press release was prepared by Officer Jack Richter, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
