Los Angeles: On July 28, 2013, around 12:45 a.m., officers assigned to the 77th Street Area Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) were driving a plain dual purpose police car east on 54th Street approaching the traffic signal at Normandie Avenue. Riding along with the officers were two civilian DART advocates seated in the back seat. As the officers were waiting for the red-light to change, a male Black ran southbound across 54th street, carrying a pistol-grip shotgun, toward the gas station located on the southwest corner of 54th Street and Normandie Avenue. One of the officers exited the vehicle and ran after the male Black suspect. The suspect turned toward the officer and an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect dropped the shotgun and fled south on Normandie Avenue. Both officers went into foot pursuit and set up a perimeter. An extensive K-9 search failed to locate the suspect. Neither officer was injured.

A loaded 12 gauge shotgun was recovered at the scene along with clothing from the suspect. A surveillance video from the gas station captured the officer involved shooting. The video was consistent with officers' account.

Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department's use-of-force policy, which states that an officer's use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
