Los Angeles: Officers had to shoot a man who was wielding a butcher knife at them and paramedics. The officers and the paramedics had responded to the man's Hollywood home on a stabbing report that the man had stabbed his roommate several times with a butcher knife.
On July 24, 2007, at about 1:30 AM, the officers arrived at a home in the 1400 block of Martel Avenue and met the victim who was suffering from multiple stab wounds to his back. The victim told the officers he had been stabbed by his roommate Mark Gregg, 25 years of age.
As the victim was being treated outside the home, Gregg came out wielding a butcher knife. Gregg advanced toward the officers and the paramedics. The officers ordered Gregg to drop the knife several times, but Gregg failed to heed their commands and raised the knife. Two officers fired their duty weapons, seriously injuring Gregg.
Gregg was taken to Cedars Sinai Hospital but died a short time later. The stab victim was also treated and released from the same hospital.
Neither officer was injured. The butcher knife was recovered at the scene.
Hollywood Area patrol officers who were involved in the shooting were Paul Razo, 30, 8 years and 4 months with the Department and Minerva Mota, 29, 5 years and 3 months with the Department.
Force Investigation Division personnel responded and are investigating the shooting.
