Bicyclist Shot and Killed


Los Angeles: Hollenbeck Area Homicide detectives are investigating the gang related shooting death of Ricardo Esparza, 18 years of age, which occurred on Garnet Street and Spence Street in the City of Los Angeles.

On July 29, 2002, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the victim was riding his bicycle westbound on Garnet Street approaching Spence Street. The suspects were waiting in an unknown type vehicle parked southbound on the corner of Spence Street north of Garnet Street. As the victim passed Spence Street, the suspects fired several rounds from an unknown handgun striking the victim multiple times. The suspects then fled the location southbound on Spence Street and continued in an unknown direction.

The victim was transported to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center where he received emergency medical treatment. The victim died from his injuries at the hospital a short time later.
