Newborn Baby Abandoned

Los Angeles: On June 13, 2002, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Devonshire Area officers responded to a radio call of a newborn baby found abandoned. A resident of an apartment in the 14600 block of Parthenia Street, Panorama City, was awakened by the cries of an infant and discovered a newborn baby outside the apartment, in the bushes.

The infant, a female of apparent Hispanic descent, was discovered with the umbilical cord still attached and unclothed. The infant was transported to Children’s Hospital and is reported to be in satisfactory condition. She is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Children and Family Services.

The investigation is being conducted by the Devonshire Detective Section, Major Assault Crimes Unit. Detectives are concentrating their efforts to locate the mother and are seeking the public’s assistance. Under the circumstance in which the infant was found, there is concern for the medical condition of the mother.

Anyone having information, which would lead to the identity or whereabouts of the mother are requested to contact Devonshire Area Detectives at 818-756-8291. On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk, 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Jason Lee, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
