Officer Involved Shooting in Southwest Area

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Friday, May 7, 1999

On Thursday, May 6, 1999, at approximately 6:05 P.M., Southwest Area Uniformed Gang Suppression Officers were traveling eastbound in the 1100 block Martin Luther King Boulevard in an unmarked dual purpose police vehicle, when they observed 4 males standing in front of an apartment building.

The officers observed one of the males was armed with a handgun. The officers made a U-turn to investigate, and two of the males ran westbound on King Boulevard. The armed suspect and an additional male ran northbound towards the apartment building. The officers chased the suspects on foot. The armed suspect ran up the stairs of the building to the second story walkway. While on the walkway, the suspect removed a pistol from his waistband and pointed the weapon at one of the officer. The officer, in fear for his life, fired one round from his service pistol striking the suspect once in the upper body. The suspect then threw his weapon on the roof of the building.

The suspect was transported by Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital where he failed to respond to medical treatment and was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released pending notification to next of kin.

There were no other injuries as a result of this incident.

The suspect's weapon was recovered from the roof of the apartment building.

A search of the surrounding area failed to locate additional suspects.

Robbery-Homicide Detectives in conjunction with Southwest Area Detectives is conducting the investigation.
