PRESS RELEASE
Friday, May 28, 1999

The suspect wanted in connection with the May 17, 1999, shooting death of 27 year old Jeffery Shapiro in Winnetka has been arrested in Duncan, Oklahoma. Duncan Police Department detectives, acting on information provided to them by Los Angeles Police Department homicide detectives, located and arrested 20 year old Bryant Joseph Filer in a Duncan residence occupied by Filer's girlfriend. Filer was wanted for the shooting death of Shapiro that occurred during a drug related dispute at an apartment in the 20400 block of Sherman Way in Winnetka. Witnesses who were present during the shooting told detectives that Filer and Shapiro had argued, then Filer shot Shapiro five times in the head and chest before fleeing from the apartment. The weapon used in the incident, a medium caliber revolver, remains outstanding.
