Late Night Shooting Leaves One Dead

Los Angeles: A man was shot to death while standing on the street, talking to his friends.

On November 22, 2007, at around 11:30 p.m., Southeast Area patrol officers responded to a shooting call in the 800 block of West 97th Street. When the officers arrived, they found
32-year-old Damon Barney lying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Paramedics transported Barney to a nearby hospital where he died shortly after.

The preliminary investigation revealed Barney had been in the area with several of his friends. Later in the night he was heard arguing and screaming, and several gunshots were heard. The motive for this shooting is believed to be gang related.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Sam Marullo or Nathan Kouri, at Operations South Bureau Criminal Gang/Homicide Group, Southeast Squad, at 213-485-4341. On weekends and during off-hours, phone the 24-hour toll free Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAWFULL (529-3855).
