Nightclub Security Guard Shoots in Self Defense

Los Angeles: On October 3, 2004, at around 2:20 a.m., patrol officers responded to an "Assault with a Deadly Weapon" shots fired investigation at 200 East Cesar Chavez Avenue.

When the officers arrived to the Chevron Gas Station, they met with the driver of a black Nissan Altima, Jose Manuel Martinez, a 27 year-old Male Hispanic from Pacoima. Martinez directed the officers’ attention to two men in the front and rear passenger seats of his vehicle. Both men were described as male Hispanics, approximately 20 to 25 years old, with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to their upper torsos.

Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the front passenger to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim who was seated in the rear passenger seat was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation has shown that the initial shooting occurred in the parking lot of Los Globos Nightclub, located at 3020 West Sunset Boulevard. The security guard was confronted by two male Hispanics in a black Nissan Altima. One of the passengers pulled out a handgun and pointed the gun at the security guard. In defense of his life, the security guard immediately armed himself with his firearm and fired twice striking both men. The driver of the vehicle drove away from the shooting and pulled into the Chevron Gas station at 200 East Cesar Chavez Avenue and called police. After the incident the security guard was questioned and released and the driver, Jose Manuel Martinez, was taken into custody for Penal Code Section 187, Murder. The weapon used during the incident was recovered and has been booked for evidence. The identities of the men are being withheld pending notification to their families.
