Officer Involved Shooting in South LA

December 1, 2005

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division detectives are investigating an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred in the Jordan Downs Housing Project.
On November 30, 2005, at about 8:50 PM, Officers D. Pearce, 28 years old, three years with the Department, and H. Taylor, 25 years old and also three years with the Department, were patrolling in the area of 2100 block of East 99th Place.
The officers heard a commotion and observed two Black men in a physical confrontation with a Hispanic man.  One of the Black men held a handgun to the Hispanic man’s head while the Hispanic man yelled for help.
Both officers ordered the gunman to drop the gun.   The gunman failed to drop his weapon and an Officer Involved Shooting occurred.  No officers were injured.  The gunman was transported to a local hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.
The gunman was identified as 47-year-old Elvin Gilbert.  He was placed under arrest for ADW on Police Officers.
The gunman and his partner were found to be bail bondsmen from the Sacramento area.  They were in Los Angeles, seeking to capture the Hispanic man for jumping bail.  The Hispanic man was arrested for three separate warrants and the other bail bondsman was released.
