7 Year-Old with Cancer Becomes a Cop for a Day

Los Angeles: In May of 1998, while leading the life of any normal seven year-old child, Andrew Fraser was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma, a form of cancer. After a 12 1/2 hour surgery at University of California Irvine Medical Center to remove a tumor, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to all of Andrew’s major organs, aorta and right kidney. This discovery now dictates the removal of Andrew’s right kidney and adrenal gland. Andrew’s treatment has included transporting him to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memphis, TN., chemotherapy done here in California and in Memphis; TN.
Andrew’s condition remained in remission until a routine check-up in April 2001,when a new tumor was found on Andrew’s remaining left kidney. With much more cancer treatment ahead of Andrew, he finds time for his love of war movies, and a bit of the History Channel. Andrew has expressed a desire to be a Los Angeles Police Officer
On Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at 6:45 a.m., Andrew’s desire to become a police officer will become a reality as he becomes one of LAPD’s finest. This opportunity will take place at Pacific Community Police Station. It is there that Andrew will enter the roll call room wearing his official LAPD uniform. Awaiting him will be Los Angeles Chief of Police Bernard Parks. Andrew’s activities for the day will include a fly-along with the LAPD’s Air Support Division, a patrol ride-along, boat patrol at sea, and much more.
The Precious Time Foundation is the brainchild of LAPD Reserve Officer Steve Bertolino who himself endured two "bouts" with cancer.
