Los Angeles: An officer-involved shooting occurred after a man pointed an unknown object at the officers.
On June 14, 2012, around 4:15 p.m., Officers responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon, shots fired at Tujunga Avenue and Valerio Street. There were two victims struck by gunfire.
The victims were doing contracting work at Tujunga Avenue and Valerio Street. The son went to his car to retrieve tools and was confronted by the suspect. An argument ensued and the suspect shot and killed the son. The father came out and an argument ensued and the suspect shot and killed the father. The suspect shoots at a third worker, but was not stuck by gunfire. The suspect drove away in his car.
As officers approached the location they were directed by witnesses towards the travelling direction of the suspect in his car. The officers immediately followed the car. A pursuit ensued on the 170 Freeway and the pursuit ended off the 170 Freeway at the Burbank Avenue off ramp.
The suspect exited his car and failed to comply with the officers’ orders. The suspect reached back into his car and pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the suspect dead at scene. There were no officers injured during the incident.
During the investigation a handgun was recovered from inside the car.
Force Investigation Division (FID) responded and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
