Los Angeles:  An officer-involved shooting occurred after a man armed with an apparent handgun pointed his weapon at LAPD officers.

On September 6, 2011, around 9 p.m., LAPD Southeast Division patrol officers responded to a call about an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon suspect in the 150 block of 101st Street.  Family members of suspect Antonio Diaz met with officers as they arrived, told them Diaz had been involved in a weapon-related assault prior to their arrival and directed them to a detached room in the backyard of their residence.

When officers entered the room, Diaz confronted them.  Officers told the suspect to raise his hands, but he pointed a handgun at them instead.  Consequently, an officer-involved shooting with both officers occurred. Officers recovered the suspect’s handgun, which turned out to be a  replica of a small-caliber revolver.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the location and pronounced Diaz dead. No officers were injured during the incident, and the Department’s Force Investigation Division personnel also responded to the scene and are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
