Discussion Regarding Consent Decree Data Collection Information

Los Angeles – – The Court approved the federal Consent Decree on June 15, 2001. The Decree, among other things, required the Los Angeles Police Department to collect vehicle and pedestrian stop data effective November 1, 2001. Additionally, the Department is required to publish, on its website, semiannual public reports which must include the pedestrian and vehicle stop data.
Today, Los Angeles City Mayor James Hahn is expected to announce that the Department has posted the first wave of information on its website. Keeping in mind that the information posted is raw data, it is anticipated that several legitimate questions and concerns will arise once the information is viewed. Unfortunately, there will also be much speculation and premature analysis of the data. In light of this, and consistent with his desire to work very closely with the Los Angeles community and to engender an administration of openness, Chief of Police William Bratton will today, meet with several members of the community to discuss the data and its implications and to reassure the community of his commitment to ensuring that members of this Department do not engage in racially-biased policing.
Members of the media are invited to cover the opening portion of this session and then return at 5:00 P.M., at which time Chief Bratton will brief the media on the meeting’s progress. Additionally, members of the media will be free to interview those participants of the meeting who are willing to be interviewed.
