Los Angeles – On Friday, March 16, 2001, Los Angeles City Council members Cindy Miscikowski and Mike Feuer introduced a motion to commission an independent study of Compressed Work Schedules (CWS) for Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) employees. This motion comes on the heels of calls from individuals and groups, for the Department to enact a schedule that would allow officers to be present for work fewer days, albeit for more hours during the course of the workday.
The Department supports the motion by the aforementioned council members to commission an independent study into the feasibility of a CWS for sworn Department employees.
Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks stated, "I am encouraged that this motion would require, as part of the study, the evaluation of the fiscal and operational implications of compressed work schedules and the experience of other large metropolitan police departments that have implemented such schedules. I am also, very pleased that the motion requires that the study not lose sight of, but rather, take into account our responsibility and duty to provide the highest level of quality service to the people of the Los Angeles community."
