Detectives Investigate Fatal Collision

Los Angeles: On Thursday, September 4, 2003, at about 7:55 p.m., an officer involved collision occurred at Broadway near 88th Street in Los Angeles. The officers were driving in a black and white police vehicle northbound Broadway when they collided with 14 year-old Rafael Ramos and 14 year-old Ricardo Avalos. The two youths were in the roadway outside the crosswalk during the hours of darkness when they were struck. The intersection was controlled by a traffic signal and marked crosswalk.
Rafael Ramos sustained serious head injuries in the collision and was transported to Martin Luther King Hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the collision.
Ricardo Avalos sustained minor injuries to his leg. He was transported to UCLA-Harbor General Hospital where he was treated and released to his parents.
