Detectives Investigate Multiple Shooting; One Dead

Los Angeles: Pacific Detectives are investigating the murder of 19 year-old Calvin Smith.
On Friday, September 5, 2003 at about 11:45 p.m., Smith was attending a large party at the Venice Boys and Girls Club located in the area of Lincoln Blvd and Lucille Ave. The initial information revealed that members from rival gangs were involved in a fight when Smith and 4 other victims ran across the street and were chased by the suspects. Two suspects, in a red Jeep Cherokee, drove up and started shooting into the crowd striking Smith and four other victims were shot with a small caliber hand gun. Smith was transported to a local hospital where he died from his wounds. The other victims were also transported to a local hospital where they were treated for gunshot wounds.
The two suspects are described as male Blacks, 18 to 20 years of age. One suspect was 6’ tall with a thin build. The second suspect was about 5’4"with a heavy build.
The motive for the shooting appears to be gang retaliation.
