"Drive-by Shooting Victim Dies After Being Shot in the Back"
Los Angeles – On Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at 7:30 p.m., Victim Desmond Damond Alexander, male Black, 22 years of age, was on the 700 block of East 27th Street, when several male Blacks in a white, Mercury Topez, pulled up next to him. For unknown reasons, one of the suspects inside the vehicle fired several shots at Mr. Alexander, striking him once in the back as he attempted to flee on foot.
Mr. Alexander was located in the rear yard of 726 E. 27th Street where he died as a result of his injuries. The suspects fled the location in their vehicle. The Los Angeles Police Department, Air Support Division, responded to the crime scene. With the assistance of the air unit, Newton officers were able to locate the fleeing vehicle and apprehend the driver without incident. One handgun and two shotguns were recovered from inside the vehicle. Additional suspects involved in the shooting of Mr. Alexander are still outstanding.
This shooting appears to be gang related. The identity of the suspect is being withheld by the detectives pending further investigation.
