Fire in City Hall

October 13, 1998

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Sunday, October 11, 1998
On October 10, 1998 at 2:50 p.m., a fire broke out on the P2 level of City Hall East, two floors underground. The building’s sprinkler system was activated and extinguished the fire, however, due to water back up, the Police Communications Equipment Room was flooded. An immediate switch to back up 9-1-1 phones was initiated. The cut-over was transparent and flawless. There was no interruption in 9-1-1 service. The back up phone system worked exactly as planned and all 9-1-1 calls were routed to area stations.

There was no change in the level of police service and there were no safety concerns resulting from this incident. The manner in which people had to report emergency and non-emergency incidents did not change.

The 9-1-1 system is now working at its normal capacity and we would like to thank the community for their cooperation during this incident.
