Los Angeles – On January 13, 2001, El Salvador fell victim to an earthquake registering 7.7 on the Richter Scale. More than 2,500 officers from the Policia Nacional Civil police were affected by the devastating earthquake. Sixteen-hundred of these officers, and their families, remain homeless. Despite their own personal lives being drastically affected, in some cases with friends and family members still missing or dead, these officers continue to work 13 to18 hour-days serving and protecting the citizens of that nation. Due to anticipated heavy rains, immediate action to rebuild homes and shelters are imperative.
On Monday, April 2, 2001, the Los Angeles Police Department will hold a Fundraiser Luncheon in front of Parker Center in concert with our Salvadorian brother officers. At 12:00 p.m., Los Angeles City Mayor Richard Riordan, Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard Parks, and many of the mayoral candidates will be in attendance to support this call for assistance. A video-tape will be viewed.
All proceeds will be donated to the Fundacion Bienestar Policial.
The Los Angeles Police Department invites the community to join in this humanitarian cause.
