Gang Member Dies After Car-to-Car Shooting

September 26, 2005

Los Angeles:  A 20-year-old San Fernando man was shot and killed by a rival gang member Sunday night in Mission Hills.
At approximately 9:50 p.m., on September 25, police were dispatched to an armed assault near the intersection of Laurel Canyon and San Fernando Mission Boulevards.  When officers arrived in the 11300 block of Laurel Canyon, they found a lone man sitting in a compact vehicle.  The car had collided with a telephone pole following a car-to-car shooting during which the driver was struck by gunfire multiple times in the upper torso.
The victim was identified as Christopher Zavala, of San Fernando, a documented gang member.  Paramedics transported Zavala, who was in critical condition, to Holy Cross Hospital, where he died a short time later.  The suspects were two male Hispanics with shaved heads, 20 to 25 years of age.  They were seen leaving the scene in a dark compact vehicle.
