"Handgun Brandished at Hospital"

Van Nuys: On September 30, 2000, at approximately 5:00 P.M. Van Nuys uniformed officers responded to Kaiser Permanente Hospital, located at 13652 Cantara Street in Panorama City for a man with a gun radio call. Upon arrival, a 45-year-old female supervising nurse directed the officers to a 24-year-old male off-duty, City of Orange police officer who had exhibited a handgun in a threatening manner. The off-duty officer was apparently angry about the medical treatment that a family member was receiving. The off-duty officer was found in possession of a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was in his legal possession.

The nurse declined to make a private person’s arrest of the off-duty officer. By law the responding officers were precluded from arresting the off-duty officer without a warrant. The off-duty officer’s handgun was taken into custody.

The investigation will be conducted by Van Nuys Detectives.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Charlotte Broughton, Media Relations Section 213-485-3586.
