Hollenbeck Law Enforcement Related Injury (LERI) – NRF039-21ne

July 21, 2021

On July 21, 2021, Hollenbeck uniform officers responded to a radio call of a suspect who attempted to stab a female Hispanic and was armed with a knife.

The officers arrived and were directed to the suspect. Six officers deployed around the suspect and gave commands to drop the knife. The suspect refused to comply resulting in one officer deploying a TASER with negative results.

Once the TASER proved to be ineffective, another officer deployed the beanbag shotgun and fired four beanbag rounds at the suspect. One of the beanbag rounds deflected off the suspects shoulder area and onto his left jaw. The suspect remained standing and would not comply with the officer’s direction to drop the knife. Following the deployment of the beanbag, another officer deployed a TASER on the suspect resulting in the suspect going to the ground and taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was transported to USCMC Hospital where he was admitted for a broken jaw and was scheduled for surgery.

A three-inch folding knife was recovered at scene.

The victim and no officers were injured during this incident.

Force Investigation Division detectives assumed responsibility of the Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW) and are investigating the Categorical Use of Force incident.
