"Homicide Detectives Investigate Shooting Death of a 16-Month Old Baby"
 

Boyle Heights: On Monday, November 26, 2001, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Hollenbeck Patrol Officers responded to an "Ambulance ADW, Shots Fired" radio call in the 3000 block of east 6th Street. Victim #1 a sixteen month-old baby boy was secured in a car seat, in the back seat area of his aunt’s (Victim #2) vehicle. Victim #2 (the child’s aunt) was seated in the front driver’s seat of the vehicle and Victim #3, (the mother of the 16 month-old boy) was seated in the right front passenger seat. An unknown suspect approached their vehicle from the rear and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle. The child sustained a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. The child’s aunt sustained a single gunshot wound to the upper back area and the child’s mother sustained a graze wound to the upper left shoulder area. The suspect then fled the scene westbound on 6th Street and continued northbound on Euclid Street.
The suspect was described as a male, Hispanic, approximately 18-years old. No further descriptions available at this time.
The 16 month-old was transported to USC Medical Center where he succumbed to his injury. Victims 2 and 3 were also transported to USC Medical Center where they are listed in stable condition.
The suspect’s actions appear to be gang related, and the weapon has been described as an unknown semi-automatic handgun.
