"Homicide Investigation in 77th Street Area"
 
Los Angeles – On Monday, July 9, 2001, at approximately 8:25 P.M., Victim Frederick Pettaway, a male Black, 41 years old and his companion, Victim John Doe, a male Black, approximately 40 years old, were standing in front of 5222 South Gramercy Place. They were engaged in a conversation. Apparently unknown to them, a suspect, described only as a male Black, approached and shot both victims multiple times. A second suspect, described only as a male Black, appeared and contacted suspect #1. Suspect #1 then fled the scene eastbound in a vehicle described as a black Camero. Suspect #2 entered a vehicle, described only as white in color, and he too fled the scene, eastbound.
Both victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper torsos. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. Victim Frederick Pettaway failed to responded to treatment and died at scene. Victim John Doe was transported to a local hospital but he too failed to respond to treatment and succumbed to his injuries.
The motive for this incident is unknown.
The suspects and weapon(s) remain outstanding.
