Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department Major Crimes Division is investigating the death of a 17-year-old juvenile in a pyrotechnic explosion.
On December 3, 2025, at 9:26 p.m., 77th Division uniformed patrol officers responded to a radio call of a male on fire in the 400 block of West 84th Street. The initial investigation revealed that an unidentified person was manipulating pyrotechnic materials when they exploded, causing serious injuries.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the person, later determined to be a 17-year-old juvenile, to a local area hospital. The juvenile succumbed to the injuries sustained and was subsequently pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
The LAPD Bomb Squad, Hazardous Materials Unit, and Detectives from Major Crimes Division responded to conduct a post-blast investigation. The Bomb Squad took action to render the scene safe, which included seizing a large quantity of illegal pyrotechnic devices and transporting all remaining explosive materials to a safe storage location.
Major Crimes Division is investigating this incident and the source of the illegal pyrotechnic materials that were seized from the residence.
There are no ongoing public safety concerns.
