6:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.

Where:
Florence Avenue between Broadway and Main Street located in the 77th Division
Who:
South Traffic Division’s Crime Task Force/Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Detail

Why:
Despite the tireless efforts of thousands of advocates and law enforcement officers alike, drunk driving continues to be one of America’s deadliest crimes. This operation will be conducted in an effort to reduce the incident of injuries, death, and property damage associated with the intoxicated driver at this location. 77th Division has experienced a 51 percent increase in Driving Under the Influence related traffic collisions year to date as compared to 2007. The check point will serve as a reminder to the community of the 77th Division to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: if we catch you driving drunk, you will be arrested.

Motorists approaching a checkpoint will see information advising them that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained a few moments while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

Funding for the checkpoint comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. We can all help make our streets safer when we report drunk drivers by calling 911.

If you have any questions regarding the checkpoint please contact Sergeant Aoki at 213-485-7336.
