LAPD Improves Quality of Life in the South Bureau

November 25, 1998

Wednesday, November 25, 1998
During the evening hours of Friday, November 20, 1998 and the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 25, 1998 undercover vice officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, Operations-South Bureau, converged on neighborhoods within 77th Street and Southeast Areas where prior street prostitution activity has been noted. A total of 46 females were arrested for prostitution. Some of the offenders were also wanted on outstanding arrest warrants. This concerted enforcement effort is just one of several strategies being employed to improve the quality of life in these neighborhoods.

California Penal Code Section 647(b) makes it a misdemeanor to solicit or agree to an act of prostitution. The law applies to the customer as well as the prostitute. It further provides for a mandatory 45-day sentence for two convictions or 90 days for three convictions.
