What:
Pedestrian Traffic Safety Education
When:
Thursday, November 18, 2010
6 a.m. -10 p.m. (News Conference at 9 a.m.)
Where:
Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue (Northeast corner)
Los Angeles, California
Who:
West Traffic Division (WTD), Community Traffic Safety Unit
Why:
With the holidays fast approaching and more vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the roadway, WTD is putting on an educational event. Due to a slight increase in vehicles striking pedestrians in the Department’s West Bureau, the event will focus on raising awareness for pedestrian safety. Officers from WTD and Olympic Area will saturate the area and educate the community regarding traffic safety by providing pedestrian safety fliers to motorists, pedestrians and business owners in the area.
A life like visual display will simulate a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic accident.
The focus will be on the following:
*Obeying all pedestrian signals
*Crossing in marked/unmarked crosswalks
*Looking 4 ways before crossing: left, right, in front and behind
*Wearing light colored clothing during darkness
*Making eye contact with drivers before crossing
Also, drivers should be cautious of the following:
*Yielding to all pedestrians in the roadway
*Excessive speed
*Obeying all traffic signals
