LAPD Releases Updated Immigration FAQ Document to Clarify Department’s Role in Immigration Enforcement NR25130jf

July 1, 2025

LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell today announced the release of a new public resource designed to clarify the Department’s responsibilities, limitations, and longstanding policies related to immigration enforcement. The document, produced in both English and Spanish, titled “Community Policing and Immigration: A Guide to LAPD’s Policies” (Immigration-Booklet-Rev-6-06-26-25.pdf), is now available to the public.

“The Los Angeles Police Department is committed to community trust, constitutional policing, and the safety of every Angeleno—regardless of immigration status,” said Chief McDonnell. “We hope this document helps answer frequently asked questions and reinforces our mission to serve all communities without fear or hesitation.”

The updated FAQ booklet outlines LAPD’s authority and practices regarding immigration matters. As a municipal police agency, the LAPD enforces state and local criminal laws, not federal civil immigration law. The document addresses common questions about LAPD policy, including:

• Whether LAPD arrests individuals for civil immigration violations (it does not);
• Whether officers ask about immigration status or birthplace during routine interactions (they do not, except under specific legal circumstances);
• How LAPD handles criminal immigration warrants and coordinates with federal agencies;
• The limits placed on federal immigration enforcement activities within LAPD facilities.

The guide also explains relevant laws, such as the California Values Act (SB 54) and the City of Los Angeles’ 2024 ordinance, which prohibits the use of City resources for federal immigration enforcement, except as required by law.

“This resource reinforces what many in our communities already know: the LAPD does not serve as an immigration enforcement agency,” added Chief McDonnell. “We want victims and witnesses to report crimes, cooperate in investigations, and seek help when needed—without fear of immigration consequences.”

The FAQ document is part of the Department’s broader community engagement efforts and reflects the values of transparency, legal clarity, and public safety for all.
