Winnetka: On Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at approximately 5:45 a.m., a manager of a Sherman Way and Oso Avenue apartment complex, confronted a burglary suspect who was attempting to steal coins from the complex’s coin operated washing machines. Armed with a handgun, the male manager attempted to confine the male burglary suspect inside the laundry room until a responding Los Angeles Police unit arrived. The suspect, who was able to escape from the room and was carrying an 18" metal car jack, advanced toward the manager and raised the steel bar over his head as if to strike him. Fearing for his life, the manager fired a single gunshot at the suspect, striking him in the face.
The suspect continued advancing upon the manager, who was able to wrestle away the metal bar from him. Los Angeles Police Department West Valley Patrol officers arrived and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect, identified as 41 year old Carl Augustus Jeter, was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Burglary. Suspect Jeter, who survived the shooting, was admitted and detained at University of Southern California Medical Center and was listed in serious condition.
