**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. Los Angeles: On February 24, 2026, at around 10:20 p.m., Mission Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call for an “Attempt Suicide, Subject Armed with a Gun.” The officers located the suspect, later identified as 63-year-old George Barragan, standing in an alley to the rear of the location. Barragan was holding a large knife and refused to drop the weapon.
The officers verbalized with Barragan for over 40 minutes when he began walking toward the officers still holding the knife. An officer discharged a round from a 40mm Less Lethal Launcher (LLL) at Barragan and a Law Enforcement Related Injury (LERI) occurred. Barragan went to the ground, but he maintained proximity to the knife, which he later picked up and continued to hold. The officers continued to verbalize with Barragan for an additional 80 minutes before he was able to be taken into custody without further incident.
The Los Angeles Fire Department transported Barragan to a local hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. Barragan was admitted into the hospital for an injury to his groin.
No other community members or officers were injured as a result of this incident.
