Law Enforcement-Related Injury in Newton Division

**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating a Law Enforcement Related Injury (LERI) that occurred in Newton Division.

On January 12, 2026, at around 9:50 pm, uniformed officers assigned to the Newton Gang Enforcement Detail attempted to conduct a pedestrian stop on a suspect, later identified as 39-year-old, Steve Lynch, at Broadway and 71st Street. While attempting to detain Lynch, officers were involved in a Non-Categorical Use of Force involving firm grips, a take down and bodyweight. Lynch was ultimately taken into custody, and officers recovered a loaded firearm.

Lynch complained of pain to his left leg and was transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department to a local hospital for medical evaluation. On January 13, 2026, Lynch was admitted for injuries sustained during the Use of Force incident.

One officer was medically treated and released for injuries sustained during the use of force. No other community members were injured during this incident.

Lynch was later booked for 29800 (A)1 PC–Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Booking No. 7161083.

Force Investigation Division (FID) personnel responded and are conducting an investigation into this incident.
