Westchester: The Los Angeles Police Foundation will honor four of the Department’s finest and a Santa Monica boy for their exemplary service to the community at its annual benefit brunch and awards ceremony. Receiving the Crystal Angel Award for Community Service will be Sergeant Beatrice Yearwood from Hollywood Community Police Station and Sergeant Victor Dennis from Harbor Community Police Station. Officers Mark Mireles and David Orozco, both recipients of the LAPD’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor, will also each be awarded the Crystal Angel Award for Courage.
Mayor James Hahn, LAPD Police Chief Bernard Parks and more than 500 community leaders and elected officials will gather at the Ahmanson Recruit Training Center in Westchester to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of these individuals and the Los Angeles Police Foundation. Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Chief and Mrs. Parks will present the Crystal Angel Awards to the 2001 honorees.
The Foundation was established in 1998 to raise monies to fund urgently needed police programs and safety equipment, not covered by the City budget. Since its inception in 1998, the Foundation has purchased and distributed Law Enforcement Trauma Shooting Kits to every one of the nearly 9,000 uniformed members of the Department. Additionally, the Foundation has purchased 14 bomb blankets to ensure the safety of the bomb squad during threat situations, ballistic shields used during the 2000 Democratic Convention, and "Hot Dog" temperature monitors for K-9 vehicles.
The media is cordially invited to attend and cover the event. Available for filming and information will be the LAPD’s SWAT, K-9 and Bomb Squads. Also available for viewing will be the LAPD "Protect and Serve" photo archive.
