The suspect has been identified as Maaliki Grant, 22-year-old male Black adult from Compton. He has been arrested and booked for Kidnap Carjacking, with bail set at $100,000.00.

Los Angeles: LAPD’s Central Area officers rescued an elderly grandmother and eight-month-old child after a carjacking late this afternoon in Downtown Los Angeles.

The woman and child were sitting in a running vehicle at 9th and Maple at around 2:45 p.m., when a male suspect jumped in the car and drove off with the two individuals inside. The Department mobilized extensive resources, including a team of detectives and an airship, in an effort to locate the vehicle.

Just after 4:00 p.m., the car was located downtown and led officers on a short slow-speed pursuit that lasted 10 minutes. A spike strip was deployed, and the vehicle came to a stop.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Both the grandmother and the child were checked out by Los Angeles Fire Department Personnel and appear to be in good condition. They are being reunited with their family.

One police officer suffered lacerations deploying the spike strip and was treated at a local hospital.
