Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge (NTUD) West L.A. Division NRF012-24bb

March 17, 2024

On March 15, 2024, at around 11:25 a.m., West Los Angeles Division officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit of a man with a gun. At the termination of the pursuit on the 11400 block of Cashmere Street, the suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Aaron Gutierrez, exited his vehicle and fled on foot. While running between two residential homes, Gutierrez discarded a black backpack which was later recovered by officers.

The backpack contained four loaded firearms. As an officer was attempting to render the firearms safe, a Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge occurred and one round was discharged, in a downward direction, striking a small metal garbage can. The round penetrated the metal can and came to rest inside. Gutierrez was arrested and booked for 422 (A) PC Criminal Threats, Booking No. 6776229.

No officers or community members were injured as a result of this Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge.

Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
