"Officer Involved Shooting"

Los Angeles: On June 14, 2000, at approximately 5:36 a.m., 77th Street Area uniformed Patrol officers received a radio call of a male Black suspect possibly assaulting a mother and daughter in the 1400 block of West 46th Street. Officers responded to the scene and encountered the suspect to the rear of his residence. The suspect had apparently assaulted a woman, his wife, and vandalized a vehicle by smashing its windows. Upon the arrival of the officers, the suspect fled into a bedroom in his residence pursued by the officers.

The suspect armed himself with a knife and refused the officers commands to drop the weapon. The officers attempting to neutralize the suspect sprayed the suspect with pepper spray without any apparent effect. The suspect then armed himself with an aerosol can and a cigarette lighter, apparently attempting to ignite the lighter and the flammable contents of the aerosol can. The suspect, unable to ignite the lighter, dropped the lighter and the can, and rearmed himself with a knife and lunged at the officers. 77th Street Area uniformed Patrol Officer Aron Algren, 34313, 25 years of age, two and a half years with the Department, in fear of his life, fired one round at the suspect, striking him once. The suspect was transferred to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. The suspect failed to respond to emergency treatment and died as a result of his injuries. The suspect was identified as Everett Evans, 43 years of age.

Two knives and an aerosol can were recovered at the scene and booked into evidence. No officers were injured during this incident.

Robbery Homicide Division is conducting the investigation.
