Officer-Involved Shooting (Animal) NRF043-22lr

August 17, 2022

On August 11, 2022, around 12:50 a.m., Harbor patrol officers stopped a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of Hawaiian Avenue, south of W F Street. There were four occupants inside the vehicle. As the vehicle came to a stop, one of the suspects exited the vehicle and ran away from the area. As the suspect fled, it appeared he was holding an unknown object. The officers maintained their position and requested a back-up for a man with gun. Seconds later, a gray dog exited the suspect vehicle, charged toward the officers, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. The dog was struck by gunfire and died at scene. The dog was later removed from the roadway by the Department of Animal Regulations.

The remaining three suspects were taken into custody. A search was conducted for the suspect that fled from the vehicle, but he was not located. Two were arrested for misdemeanor charges. The fourth suspect was detained, questioned, and released. A loaded firearm with an obliterated serial number was recovered from the vehicle. No one was injured during the incident.

Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
