Los Angeles: On May 1, 2026, at around 0500 am, 77th Patrol Division uniformed police officers responded to a radio call of a Hot Prowl Burglary at the 7600 block of S. Normandie Ave. Upon arrival, the officers were met by a family member who advised the officers that two brothers were fighting inside of the house.
The officers made entry into the residence and encountered the suspect, later identified as Fredrick Spells, and the victim struggling over a knife while standing in the doorway of a bedroom. The officers gave verbal commands to Spells to drop the knife. The officers also utilized an intermediate force option to gain compliance with their verbal direction. Neither were effective as Spells and the victim continued to struggle over the knife, which resulted in an Officer-Involved Shooting.
Spells was struck by gunfire, collapsed onto the ground, and was taken into custody. The officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived at scene and transported Spells to a local hospital for medical treatment. A knife was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence.
No community members or officers were injured during this incident. Force Investigation Division (FID) personnel responded to the scene and assumed investigative responsibility for this incident.
