Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division and California Department of Justice (DOJ) are investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Harbor Division.
On December 31, 2025, at around 9:40 p.m., Harbor Patrol Division uniformed police officers responded to a radio call for an unknown trouble, possible restraining order violation, at an apartment in the 500 block of West 37th Street. The residence was identified as a special location with Communications Division. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who advised the officers that the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Lawrence Gonzales, was inside her apartment.
The officers contacted Gonzales inside the apartment, and he refused to comply with the officers’ command to turn around and place his hands behind his back. The officers approached Gonzales who physically resisted their efforts to detain him. The physical resistance escalated into a violent confrontation where Gonzales attempted to disarm the officers resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.
Both officers received bruises, cuts and scrapes from this incident and were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. Additionally, The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Gonzales to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
No community members were injured during this incident.
Notifications to Gonzales’ next of kin were conducted by representatives from LAPD’s Family Liaison Section.
Force Investigation Division personnel, along with representatives from the California Department of Justice, responded to the scene and assumed investigative responsibility for this incident.
