Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Rampart Division.
On December 2, 2025, at around 11:00 a.m., an on-duty, plainclothes detective assigned to Rampart Area was stopped at a red tri-light on Olympic Boulevard at Alvarado Street. The detective was alone, driving a plain, black Dodge Charger without emergency lights.
The detective observed two males fighting in the street in front of his vehicle. The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Johnny Valencia, chased the victim while armed with a knife and began stabbing him, causing the victim to fall to the ground. Valencia continued stabbing the victim as he was lying on the ground. The detective exited his vehicle while Valencia was still armed with the knife, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred.
Rampart Patrol Division uniformed officers arrived shortly thereafter and took Valencia into custody without incident. Valencia sustained a gunshot wound and was transported by fire department paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Valencia was booked for attempted murder. The victim was also transported to a nearby hospital and treated for stab wounds he sustained during this incident. At the time of this press release, both Valencia and the victim were listed in stable condition.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
No officers or other community members were injured as a result of this incident
Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
