On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the Chief of Police authorized the release of the officer’s name who was involved in an Officer Involved Shooting, that occurred on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in Southeast Area. The involved officers were: Police Officer II Matthew Martin, Serial No. 43648 and Police Officer II Martin Eudave, Serial No. 44006

 

Officer-Involved Shooting in Southeast Division

**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Southeast Division.

On May 3rd , 2025, at around 9:00 a.m., Southeast Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a call of an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW), Domestic Violence in Progress” at a residence in the 900 block of East 118th Drive. Additional information indicated the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Shamar Bennett, was armed with a gun and possibly seeking “suicide by police.” While officers were at scene, screams could be heard from inside the residence.

Officers made entry into the house and encountered Bennett armed with a rifle and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. Bennett was struck by gunfire and subsequently taken into custody without further incident. During this incident, officers were able to safely remove four additional people from inside the residence. Bennett was transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for a gunshot wound to his lower right leg. Bennett was absentee booked for 273.5(A)PC-Corporal Injury on a Spouse/Cohabitant.

A female was treated at scene by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel for injuries sustained during the domestic violence incident.

The rifle Bennett was armed with was found to be a CO2 powered, AR-style pistol which was recovered from the scene and booked as evidence. The weapon was fully automatic and capable of firing metallic BB rounds.

No officers or other community members were injured as a result of this incident.
