Officer-Involved Shooting with Gunman

Los Angeles: On December 3, 2004, at approximately 12:05 a.m., Rampart Area Gang Investigation Team Officer Steve Hernandez was checking a known gang location with other gang unit officers at 847 South UnionAvenue. Upon entry, two suspects ran from the location. One of the suspects, Edgar Tovar, dropped a handgun and was immediately arrested. The second suspect, 20 year-old Marvin Lopez, ran southbound from the location with Officer Hernandez and other officers in foot pursuit.
Officer Hernandez caught up with Lopez at the staircase to 1605 Olympic Boulevard. Lopez ran up the stairs, removed a handgun and pointed at Officer Hernandez. At that point an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred.
Lopez was transported to California Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.
No officers were injured. Lopez’ gun was recovered at the scene.
Rampart Area Gang Investigation Team is handling the arrest of Tovar for 12025 PC, Carrying a Concealed Weapon. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division Detectives are conducting the Officer-Involved Shooting investigation.
