Pacoima Suspect Points Replica Handgun at Officers Resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting NR10369an

July 20, 2010

Los Angeles:  An officer-involved shooting (OIS) occurred after a suspect pointed a replica handgun at officers.

On July 16, 2010, at approximately 12:40 a.m., Los Angeles Police Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 11900 block of Phillippi Avenue, in Pacoima.  The suspect, Luciano Reyes, age 35, was demanding entry into the home of his estranged girlfriend.  Reyes appeared to be intoxicated and said that he had a gun, which prompted his estranged girlfriend to call the police.  The former girlfriend phoned police and waited for help to arrive.

Police Officer III David Hunt, Serial No. 32180, 14 years, nine months with the Department, and Police Officer I Aareon Jefferson, Serial No. 40398, six months with the Department, received the call and responded to the Pacoima home.  When Officers Hunt and Jefferson arrived they began walking up to the residence.  Reyes suddenly appeared standing inside the front yard of the residence, behind a wrought iron fence.  Reyes got the attention of the officers by telling them he is the one they were looking for.  Reyes then produced what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at Officer Hunt, at which point an Officer Involved Shooting Occurred.

As the officers moved to a position of cover, Reyes retreated toward the front door of the residence, at which point Reyes again raised his gun at officers and another Officer Involved Shooting occurred.  At this point the officers broadcast an “officer needs help shots fired” call which caused the response of numerous units.

As the responding officers arrived, they positioned themselves across the street behind cover.  Reyes had made his way along the north side of the house, in a westbound direction, toward the rear driveway of the residence.  When Reyes got to the driveway at the edge of the property, officers were able to determine that he was still holding what appeared to be a handgun.  When Reyes pointed the gun toward officers, another Officer Involved Shooting occurred, involving the following additional officers:

Police Officer II Paul Doyle, Serial No. 39627, two years, four months with the Department, and Police Officer II Fernando Alonso, Serial No. 39855, one year and six months with the Department, both assigned unit 16X72.
