Parole Check Results in Officer-Involved Shooting NR09276rf

June 9, 2009

Los Angeles:  On June 5, 2009, just before 8:30 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were assisting California state parole officers in a parole compliance search when a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred.

Officers were searching for parolee Ricardo Antonio Cabrales in the 3800 block of East 6th Street in Los Angeles County.  They approached a residence where they believed he was present and identified themselves, but Cabrales refused to open the door.  Moments later, armed with a small semi-automatic handgun, he attempted to escape from a side door and was approached by LAPD Officer Jose Hidalgo, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.  Officer Hidalgo has four years with the Department.

Cabrales was shot and pronounced dead at the location by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel.  His weapon was recovered, and the LAPD Force Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.
